Embodiment approach

[0034] In one embodiment, a self-expanding intragastric device comprises an uninflated balloon containing a propellant substance and an empty container in its lumen. In an alternative embodiment, the airbag also contains a solid acid, in which case the device may be in accordance with any of the following embodiments: (1) the solid acid is placed in the container and the launch material is in the airbag cavity, (2) the solid acid Both acid and emissive material are placed in the cavity while the container is empty, and (3) solid acid is placed in the cavity while the emissive material is in the container. The preferred solid acid in these embodiments is citric acid.

[0035] The self-expanding intragastric device of the present invention may be provided to suitably trained medical personnel as part of a kit. Containers such as vials, ampoules or pre-filled syringes containing the activating liquid may also be provided as part of the kit. The properties of the activation liqu...

Abstract

A self-inflating, intragastric balloon device (1) is activated by addition of an activating liquid into an acid or water soluble receptacle (b) located within the bladder (2). After an approximately pre-determined time period post-activation, the activating liquid breaches the receptacle wall and causes contact between an acid in liquid form and an emissive substance within the bladder, causing it to inflate. The device is conveniently provided to medical personnel as part of a kit that further contains a syringe and the activating liquid. The device also can have acid or pepsin degradable portions that cause it to deflate after residing in the stomach for a prolonged period of time during which it imparts a feeling of satiety in the patient.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to medical devices for appetite control, and more particularly to intragastric balloons. Background of the invention [0002] Obesity is a major health problem in developed countries. Complications of obesity affect almost one in five people in the United States and cost approximately $40 billion annually. With the exception of rare pathological conditions, weight gain is directly related to overeating. [0003] Non-invasive approaches to weight loss include increasing metabolic activity to expend calories or reducing caloric intake, which can be achieved through behavioral changes or pharmacological interventions to reduce appetite. Other methods include surgery to reduce stomach volume, banding to limit the size of the stomach, and intragastric devices to reduce appetite by taking up space in the stomach. [0004] Gastric volume occupying devices allow patients to feel full after eating only small amounts of food. ...
