Embodiment Construction

[0026] The present invention is susceptible to being embodied in different forms, which have been shown in the drawings, and specific embodiments will be described in detail here, it being clear that what is presently shown is an example of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the example given.

[0027] The present invention relates to a cage nut assembly 20 . The caged nut assembly 20 includes a nut 22 and a cage 24 .

[0028] Nut 22 in figure 1 with figure 2 best shown in . Nut 22 includes a preferably rectangular plate portion 26 having a generally planar upper surface 28, a generally planar lower surface (not shown), and side walls 32 connecting the upper and lower surfaces 28 and 28 together. The nut 22 also includes a preferably circular second plate portion 34 having a generally planar upper surface 36, a generally planar lower surface 38, and a side wall 40 connecting the upper surface 36 and the lower surface 38 together....

Abstract

A cage nut assembly has a nut and a cage. The cage has a base having an aperture therethrough and a pair of flexible arm portions which are capable of supporting the nut off of the base. The cage nut assembly is welded to a workpiece. The workpiece is sent through an e-coat or ELPO bath. As the flexible arm portions of the cage support the nut off of the base, the possibility of the nut being stuck to the cage is reduced. A fastener is inserted through an aperture of the workpiece, through the aperture of the base and is threadedly engaged with the nut. As the fastener is torqued down, a force is applied to the nut such that the arm portions of the cage flex and allow the nut to come into contact and be secured against the base.

Description

technical field [0001] This patent application claims domestic priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 432,165, filed December 10, 2002, entitled "Caged Nut Assembly With Flexible Cage." Background technique [0002] The invention relates to a caged nut assembly. [0003] Cage nut assemblies are well known in the art and serve useful purposes. They secure threaded nuts in places in the system architecture where tools are difficult or impossible to reach. Cage Nut Assemblies are used in vehicle seat connections, radiator connections, chassis drivetrain connections, and any other where the nuts are required to have "X" and "Y" axis adjustment capabilities to accommodate variations in tolerance and external thread tightening parts meshing applications. [0004] The use of prior art cage nut assemblies creates several problems. One problem arises when the cage of the cage nut assembly is welded to a mating surface such as an automobile frame. After the cage is welded ...
