Problems solved by technology

However, since physicians widely rely on some type of artifact to know the position of the probe tip with respect to the lesion, it is difficult to completely eliminate artifacts produced by metallic probes

Embodiment Construction

[0018] FIG. 1 shows a handheld vacuum-assisted biopsy device 10 comprising a needle assembly 20 and a holster 15 . Needle assembly 20 is removably attached to holster 15 . Together they form a lightweight, ergonomically shaped hand-operated part called handle 12 . Since the handle 12 is manipulated by the operator's hand instead of the electromechanical arm, the operator can manipulate the handle 12 very freely against the tissue mass to be examined. Surgeons performing such procedures can judge by touch the severity, density and firmness of the tissue encountered. In addition, the handle 12 can be held so that it is approximately parallel to the patient's chest wall in order to obtain tissue sections closer to the chest wall than can be achieved using an instrument mounted on a motorized arm.

[0019] The device includes means for obtaining a tissue sample. Holster 15 includes an advancement button 16 for moving blade 21 distally (as shown in FIG. 1 ) through blade lumen 3...

Abstract

A biopsy device which is compatible for use with a magnetic resonance imaging machine. The device includes a non-metallic elongated substantially tubular needle having a distal end, a proximal end, a longitudinal axis therebetween, and a port on the elongated needle for receiving a tissue sample. The device further includes a sharpened distal tip for insertion within tissue. The sharpened distal tip is attached to the distal end of the needle and at least partially comprises a material which will leave an artifact under magnetic resonance imaging.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to tissue sampling devices, and more particularly to improved and atraumatic biopsy probes for subcutaneous biopsy. Background of the invention [0002] The diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignancies, precancerous states, and other disorders is a long and intensively studied area. Non-invasive methods of examining tissue are palpation, Thermography, PET, SPECT, nuclear imaging, X-ray, MRI, CT, and ultrasound imaging. A biopsy may be taken during an incision or other puncture (through the skin) when the physician suspects that the tissue contains cancer cells. For the incision procedure, the surgeon uses a scalpel to make a large incision in the tissue to allow direct visualization and access to the tissue mass to be examined. Entire blocks (excisional biopsies) and partial blocks (incisional biopsies) were removed. With a needle biopsy, a needle-like tool is used through a very small incision int...
