Embodiment Construction

[0014] first reference figure 1 , shows in block diagram form an ultrasound system constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. The ultrasound probe 100 includes an array 102 of ultrasound transducer elements that transmit ultrasound pulses and receive ultrasound echo signals. The array may be a one-dimensional linear or curved array for two-dimensional imaging, or may be a two-dimensional matrix of transducer elements for electron beam steering and focusing in two or three dimensions. Ultrasound transducer elements in array 102 transmit beams of ultrasound energy through timed actuation thereof under the control of transmit controller 28 and receive echoes that return in response to each transmission. Echoes from the transmitted ultrasonic energy are received by the transducer elements of the array 102, which generate echo signals, which are transmitted through a transmit / receive (T / R) switch 22 when the system uses a digital beamformer 30. couple...

Abstract

An ultrasound system acquires and displays contrast enhanced ultrasound images as contrast agent clusters wash in and out of a region of interest in a body. During wash-in, wash-out cycles, operation of the ultrasound system is varied to optimize system performance of different portions of the contrast cycle. Ultrasound transmission, received signal processing, and image processing are one of the operations of an ultrasound system that can be altered. During wash-in, wash-out cycles, a change in system operation is automatically invoked at a predetermined time or at the occurrence of an event.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to medical diagnostic ultrasound systems, and in particular to ultrasound imaging of contrast agent wash-in and wash-out with changes to the operation of the ultrasound system. Background technique [0002] Imaging of blood flow for suspected cancerous pathology using ultrasound is often assisted by the use of contrast agents. Ultrasound contrast agents are solutions of microbubbles that are injected into the bloodstream. Microbubbles are highly echogenic, returning strong echogenic signals which are easily detected and highlight areas of blood flow. Furthermore, echo signals from microbubbles contain significant harmonic frequency content, enabling microbubble echo signals to be easily separated from signals returning from tissue. After contrast agent injection (often in the form of a bolus) begins, the contrast agent in the bloodstream begins to reach the region of interest (ROI) in the body and is easily discernible b...
