Abstract

Described are various embodiments of a self-monitoring oxygenation system and method. In one embodiment, a system is provided for monitoring for abnormal blood oxygenation levels. The system comprises: an optical spectroscopy probe for acquiring blood oxygenation data representative of deoxyhemoglobin levels over time; and a digital data processor operatively connected to said probe and programmedto: monitor relative variations in said deoxyhemoglobin levels to output a signal representative of a higher health risk rating of hyperoxia.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to blood oxygenation monitoring, and more particularly to abnormal blood oxygenation level monitoring systems and methods and self-monitoring oxygenation systems and methods. Background technique [0002] Changes in oxygen content and barometric pressure can have a significant impact on the health of the human body. A range of human activities in hazardous environments—often requiring oxygen-supplied devices or requiring being forced into sealed and / or pressurized environments, such as deep water diving, flying fighter jets, working at high altitudes or at great depths (i.e., deep tunnels) construction, etc.), or in a hyperbaric chamber—may cause abnormal blood oxygen levels. Low blood oxygen levels (hypoxia) can lead to headaches, dizziness, tunnel vision, and eventually sudden loss of consciousness. The opposite situation of obtaining excess blood oxygen levels (hyperoxia) leads to central nervous system (CNS) toxicit...
