Problems solved by technology

Similar to the fluorescent probes of EP 2857830, these pancreatic juice developers have the problem of impreciseness, i.e. the exact leak point may be difficult to identify and the dosage form needs to be removed once used

Embodiment Construction

[0018] Various concepts have been considered in order to provide means for pancreatic juice leak detection, addressing needs in the art. Powder-based means, such as cross-linked starch microspheres impregnated with indicators, were found to be difficult to handle and apply. Furthermore, the applied powder is easily washed away by pancreatic juice, thus providing imprecise detection, if any. Furthermore, attempts to overcome its shortcomings by placing the dry powder on tape or replacing it with an indicator-impregnated wipe or gauze have been unsuccessful in providing accurate detection.

[0019] In order to overcome these disadvantages and provide a pancreatic juice leak detection means that addresses the needs in the art, fluid rather than dry, solid or fixed pancreatic juice leak detection means are considered. Accordingly, an aqueous body fluid leak detection composition comprising a leak indicator is provided.

[0020] It is recognized that the use of a pH indicator as ...

Abstract

A body fluid leakage detection aqueous composition, for use e.g. in intraoperative pancreatic fluid leakage detection. The composition comprises a gelling agent, increasing the viscosity of the composition, and buffering species, the composition thereby being buffered. The gelling agent is cross-linked alpha-glucan microspheres. Further, the composition comprises a pH-indicator. The pH of the composition is at least 0.1 pH units lower, or higher, than a pKa of the pH-indicator.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a body fluid leakage detection composition and its use in detecting pancreatic juice leakage in conjunction with pancreatic surgery such as partial pancreatectomy. Background technique [0002] Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in the world, and pancreatectomy is the only potential treatment. Tens of thousands of these operations are performed globally each year. A common, serious, and costly complication is postoperative pancreatic fistula caused by pancreatic juice leakage and is the most important unsolved problem in pancreatic surgery. Leakage of pancreatic juice not only poses a risk of bacterial infection but also the risk of digestion of nearby organs such as the intestine or blood vessels due to the self-digestion of the pancreatic juice, which can lead to severe bleeding or even death. [0003] Therefore, pancreatic juice leakage is the most important morbidity problem in p...
