Problems solved by technology

Although easier to perform, feather sexing has the disadvantage of being limited to the specific genetic cross of the bird
Sexing via secondary sex traits is the easiest method to perform but has the disadvantage of requiring birds of both sexes to be reared together for the first week after hatching due to feed cost and feed conversion considerations for the farm Factors may be more expensive than anal / cloacal sexing
[0005] Most importantly, broiler culture optimized for egg production is critical for meat production due to the increasing optimization of meat production on the one hand and egg production on the other. no longer suitable or economically attractive

Abstract

A DNA editing agent is disclosed which comprises a first nucleic acid sequence for eliciting in an inducible manner a lethal phenotype of male chick embryos in an egg of a bird and a second nucleic acid sequence for directing said nucleic acid sequence for effecting said lethal phenotype to a Z chromosome of a cell of the bird. Use of the DNA editing agent is also disclosed.

Description

Background technique [0001] Some of the embodiments of the invention relate to genome edited birds that lay eggs comprising inactive male chick embryos. [0002] Sex separation is an important aspect of the production of all poultry species, but specifically broiler chickens and essentially all layer birds as well as turkeys. For broilers and turkeys, sex separation allows for more appropriate management and feeding according to the needs of the two sexes, as opposed to the sex-neutral rearing that is done in most cases today. Basically, all commercial pullet (hens that will be table egg production) farms utilize sex separation of flocks. Farms cull males, while females are clearly earmarked for egg production. [0003] Currently, there are three methods available for sexing poultry. Day-old chicks can be sexed by anal / cloacal sexing or feather sexing methods. Alternatively, male and female chicks can be housed together until secondary sex characteristics become apparent, ...
