[0030] Traditional microwave amplifier tubes such as traveling wave tubes (TWT) and klystrons are used to obtain amplified RF signals. Traveling wave tubes are long, thin vacuum tubes that have a magnetic field around the tube. An electron gun present at one end of the tube emits electrons which are focused by a magnetic field to form an electron beam which passes through a helix placed in the middle of the tube. A helix extends from the RF input to the RF output through which the electron beam passes. An electric potential is applied at the anode and cathode of the tube which, together with the magnetic field, helps accelerate the electron beam towards the collector end of the tube, which returns the electrons to the circuit. Klystrons are similar to traveling wave tubes. Instead of the helical or coupled cavities found in traveling wave tubes, klystrons include multiple cavity resonators to velocity the electron beam for amplification. However, if any part of the TWT or k...
