Abstract

A method for transporting containers or pallets with cargo using at least one transport device comprising a frame consisting of an elongated central member (11) and a load-carrying beam (12). Each load beam (12) extends from different ends of the central member (11) in the same direction perpendicular to the central member (11), thereby forming a generally U-shaped frame. In use, the U-shaped frame extends in a generally horizontal direction. The load beam is configured to engage and carry the bottom of the container or pallet. The underside of the frame is provided with a plurality of air bearings (13) arranged to lift the frame with cargo from the flat platform surface. At the transshipment location, containers or pallets to be transported are moved into or out of the carrier. To transport the container or pallet into or out of the vehicle, by activating the air bearing (13), at least one transport device engages and lifts the container or pallet. The transport device is moved into or out of the vehicle while the air bearing (13) is activated, and the transport device is disengaged from the container or pallet by deactivating the air bearing (13).
