Embodiment Construction

[0021] Audience measurement data for broadcast media from traditional panel providers is typically associated with broadcast events or blocks of time. A panel participant who has agreed to join a panel may indicate to the panel provider that they watch or listen to a particular event or station, such as a television show, radio show, movie, commercial, during a particular time period; the identified time period is such as minutes , 10 minutes, half an hour, or any other such period of time; or any other such information. A panel participant may provide a diary or journal, or wear or carry a portable device that detects what is played back in the immediate area and records a journal for subsequent transmission to the panel provider. A panel provider may aggregate and anonymize demographic information about each panel participant viewing or listening to an event to generate an audience profile indicating characteristics such as specific gender, age, percentage of the audience fr...

Abstract

The present disclosure provides systems and methods for enhancing audience measurement data. Offline and online audience measurement data can be compared and correlated to improve the quality of each data and source collection. A positive correlation between offline and online datasets may indicate that demographic characteristics are likely to be true, such that outliers are removed from the set or considered with reduced weight. A negative correlation may indicate that demographic information, such as online measurement data, within a set of sources may be false or untrustworthy.

Description

Background technique [0001] Traditional broadcast audience measurement systems utilize single-source data panels consisting of individuals or households over time to record media exposure over time. Because these individuals are usually paid to participate, measurement data tend to be of high quality, but only of limited population size. Therefore, the statistical confidence in applying the measurement data to a large population may be low. In contrast, online audience measurement systems can obtain measurement data from very large populations, but this data may be of questionable quality as users may provide false or incomplete demographic data for various reasons. Contents of the invention [0002] Offline and online audience measurement data can be compared and correlated to improve the quality of each data and source collection. A positive correlation between offline and online data related to a particular event may indicate that a demographic trait is likely to be tru...
