Abstract

The present invention relates to a vehicle battery power transfer limit management system and method. A vehicle includes a powertrain and a traction battery, wherein the powertrain includes an electric machine. The vehicle also includes at least one controller configured to cause the electric machine to absorb torque during a transmission shift event. Absorbing the torque causes the battery to be charged with the current produced by the electric machine according to a predetermined power transfer schedule that defines a charge limit. The controller is also configured to allow the current to exceed the charging limit for a predetermined duration under certain conditions.
