Problems solved by technology

However, traditional methods set a single threshold for each frequency channel of the reverse link
If this threshold is set too high, M2M devices with large path losses cannot efficiently send traffic on the reverse link
If the threshold is set too low, the capacity of the frequency channel will be reduced

Embodiment Construction

[0043] In one embodiment, the network may be limited by link budget. A link budget is a statistic of gains and losses from a transmitter (eg, an M2M device) to a receiver (eg, a base station) over a communication medium. If the link budget of the network (e.g., M2M wireless WAN) is constrained, using Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to allow multiple devices to access the same frequency channel to transmit on the reverse link may Causing the operational RoT of the channel negatively impacts the link budget of the reverse link. However, if the network operates with a lower RoT in order to minimize the impact of the RoT on the coverage of the network, the capacity on the reverse link may be drastically reduced. In one embodiment, the link budget of the network may be limited due to power constraints and / or large cell sizes of devices (eg, M2M devices) in the network.

Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices are described for managing wireless communications in a machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless Wide Area Network (WAN). An operating frequency band of the M2M wireless WAN is divided into at least a first frequency channel and a second frequency channel. The first and second frequency channels being used for communications on a reverse link. A first rise over thermal (RoT) threshold is set for the first frequency channel. A second RoT threshold is set for the second frequency channel. The second RoT threshold is lower than the first RoT threshold.

Description

Background technique [0001] In general terms, the following relates to wireless communications, and more specifically, to communications in machine-to-machine (M2M) wireless wide area networks (WANs). Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, sensor data, tracking data, and so on. These systems may be multiple-access systems capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (eg, time, frequency and power). Examples of such multiple-access systems include Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) systems, Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) systems and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems. [0002] Generally, a wireless multiple-access communication system may include multiple base stations, each base station simultaneously supporting communication ...
