[0021] In accordance with the teachings of the present invention, a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) is used to determine the free-running frequency of the internal self-contained clock oscillator and provide a means for confirming that the desired precise clock frequency (e.g., within 0.25% of said desired frequency) is running. Very accurate frequency (period) information of operation or an indication of how much and in which direction to adjust the frequency of a clock oscillator to maintain the desired frequency accuracy. Automatic frequency adjustment of the internal self-contained clock oscillator can be implemented to maintain its desired precise frequency. The temperature and voltage compensation profiles used to maintain the accuracy of the CTMU can be stored in a table (eg, non-volatile memory) for further improving the absolute frequency accuracy of the internal self-contained clock oscillator.
