Problems solved by technology

However, the use of large search coils has its own drawbacks: when using metal detectors with large search coils, for example in the portable field, they are difficult to navigate in long grass or between objects such as trees due to their size. use
There is also the drawback that stationary (non-portable) metal detectors such as those used for industrial use will need to take up more space as the required size increases to accommodate the larger coil

Embodiment Construction

[0105] Synchronization of metal detectors operating in close proximity

[0106] According to the first, second and third embodiments of the present invention, one or more metal detectors incorporate a technique or a combination of techniques to integrate the timing circuits of the metal detector (e.g. the metal detector's emission and / or Receive timing signals) are synchronized together to reduce or eliminate interference between detectors, allowing multiple detectors to operate in close proximity to each other. So, and taking the example of a portable metal detector that is manually operated to check for metal in and near the ground, this would allow a group of operators to operate in a short period of time without overlapping (where one or more detectors would otherwise covering the same area) cover a large amount of ground. The first, second, and third embodiments include the use of signal communication via GPS (Global Positioning System), wireless radio links, wireless in...

Abstract

The present invention relates to the field of metal detectors, which may find military, industrial and civilian application. In one form, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for a metal detection system in which a first component is synchronised with a second component. The invention is adapted for use in diminishing interference between two or more metal detectors operating in close proximity. In one preferred form the invention is adapted for use in a ground loop metal detection system that allows for the detection of metal or metallic objects at greater depths than currently available with standard pulse induction or induction type metal detecting equipment.
