Problems solved by technology

[0004] While some other wireless communication protocols (e.g., Bluetooth) may provide a slightly higher number of channels, the number is still limited to levels that may not be sufficient for large office buildings or large call centers
Additionally, the increased use of wideband voice in, for example, Microsoft Office Communicator further reduces the number of available channels due to the higher bandwidth required for each channel

Embodiment Construction

[0023] Figure 1a and Figure 1b An example of a headphone system 1 in which the invention can be used is shown. The headset system 1 comprises a headset 2 and a base station or base unit 3 . Figure 1a In , the headset system is shown in a passive state, wherein the headset 2 is placed in the base station 3 . Figure 1b In , the headset 2 has been removed from the base station 3 and a connection has been established between the headset 2 and the base station 3 by transmitting radio signals between them. The transmitted radio signals can represent sound (speech), data, or control signals. The wireless communication between the headset 2 and the base station 3 may use any of a number of different wireless communication protocols, such as Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), Bluetooth, Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) or Ultra Wideband (UWB). DECT seems to be the most widely used wireless communication protocol for the applications described, so in the following, a DEC...

Abstract

The invention discloses transmitting radio signals between a headset and a base station. A headset system comprises a headset (51) and a base station, wherein both headset (51) and base station comprise a transceiver configured to transmit radio signals between headset and base station according to a first wireless communication protocol. Both headset (51) and base station further comprise a transceiver configured to transmit radio signals between headset and base station according to a second wireless communication protocol; and at least one of said headset (51) and said base station further comprises selecting means (29) configured to select one of the first and second wireless communication protocols for transmission of radio signals between headset and base station. When both headset and base station have transceivers for two different wireless communication protocols and one of these can be selected for transmission it means that the combined number of channels can be used, which increases the number of channels that can be used simultaneously.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a headset system comprising a headset and a base station and radio signal transmission between the headset and the base station according to a wireless communication protocol. Background technique [0002] Today, standard telephones are rapidly being replaced by wireless headsets. Wireless headsets typically communicate with the base station through the transmission of radio signals between the headset and the base station. Therefore, the headset system can be considered to include the headset and the base station. The base station can be connected to, for example, a telephone line or a computer installed with a communication program such as Microsoft Office Communicator. Wireless communication between the headset and the base station of the headset system may use any of a variety of wireless communication protocols, such as Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT), Bluetooth, Wireless Fidelity (WiFi), or Ultra Wid...
