Problems solved by technology

Thus, an impressive number of combinations soon appeared, especially for upgrades, and the burden on the application manager thus increased
Beyond that, users can be confused by license issues that appear from the bundle table, and will almost inevitably call the help desk for clarification
The problem arises because the license is coupled to any particular size of application

Embodiment Construction

[0081] refer to figure 1 , monitoring function 2 works differently with respect to the previous instance involving two bundles X, Q and three sizes Z, Y, W, where Q is more expensive than X, and size Z<size Y<size W. Below, the new operating modes are indicated in order to perform the comparison.

[0082] The base license is the same, so payment in euros or conversion in credits is pretty irrelevant, but conversion in credits is preferred to have uniformity with size upgrades.

Abstract

The invention relates to improved management of software licenses in a computer network. Management of software licenses in client-server mode starts with a license policing based on clustering, nominally, into differently valued bundles many variegated applications to be licensed. Applications have an initial size which could be successively upgraded on request. Size may encompass a variable number of different Entities, such as: personal computers, equipments to be modeled in a MES environment, client connections, XML tags identifying objects in a database, etc. Two management processes run concurrently at the Server side: 1) a first one is dedicated to distribute licenses for new software applications and licenses for upgrading to new versions of previously licensed applications, and further checking any attempt to violate a software license; 2) while a second one, upon reception of specific requests by licensees, calculates the number of credits which are needed for upgrading the size previously licensed for applications, checks that available credits at the requesters be sufficient for upgrading, otherwise sends back a warning for insufficient credits.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the handling of computer software licenses, and more precisely to the improved management of software licenses in computer networks. Background technique [0002] According to information technology (IT), an "application" usually requires a software license to run, and an "application" is a computer program designed to help people perform single or multiple related specific tasks. It helps to solve real world problems. Examples include: - Enterprise software - Automation software - Accounting software - Office suites - Graphics software, etc. Different implementations of the same version of the application (different from each other by different embedded features and corresponding prices, for example, Microsoft?'s popular Windows? operating system is available as Standard Edition, Professional Edition, Small Business Edition, Network Edition, etc. and selling) commercialization is a common practice for application dev...
