Embodiment Construction

[0035] Several embodiments of a system for remote photoplethysmography will be described herein. Photoplethysmography is a method used to characterize certain periodic physiological phenomena using changes in skin reflectance. Human skin can be modeled as an object with at least two layers, one of which is the epidermis (the thin surface layer) and the other is the dermis (the thicker layer below the epidermis) . About 5% of incident light is reflected in the epidermis, which is true for all wavelengths and skin tones. The remaining light is scattered and absorbed within the two skin layers in a phenomenon known as body reflection (described in the Dichromatic Reflection Model). The epidermis acts like an optical filter, mainly absorbing light. In the dermis, light is scattered and absorbed. Absorption depends on blood composition and thus is sensitive to changes in blood flow. The optical properties of the dermis are generally the same for all races. The dermis contains...

Abstract

A method of photoplethysmography includes processing a signal (46; 56) based on at least one signal (35; 50) from at least one sensor (5; 18-20; 26; 63) arranged to capture light from a living subject to extract information on a characteristic of a periodic biological phenomenon. At least one of the signals (35; 50) from at least one sensor (5; 18-20; 26; 63) is obtained by using at least one of a light source (1; 11- 13) and a filter (6; 17; 64) placed before the at least one sensor (5; 18-20; 26; 63) tuned to a peak in an absorption spectrum of water.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of photoplethysmography, a system for performing photoplethysmography, and a computer program. Background technique [0002] Verkruysse, W. et al. 22 December 2006 at Optics Express A method is disclosed in "Remote plethysmographic imaging using ambient light", Issue 16(26), pp. 21434-21445, in which the Photoplethysmographic signal. Heart rate and respiration rate can be quantized into up to several harmonics. While the green channel has the strongest photoplethysmographic signal corresponding to (oxy)hemoglobin absorption peaks, the red and blue channels are also included in the photoplethysmographic information. [0003] A problem with known methods is that the green channel may suffer from noise which makes it difficult to recover the photoplethysmographic information of interest. The same is true for an even larger range of other channels that are only weakly correlated with biometric signals. Conten...
