Abstract

The invention discloses a gene GW8 (Grain Width in Chromosome 8) (SEQ ID NO:1-6) for controlling rice grain width, grain weight and yield and an application thereof. The GW8 can control the shape and the size of a rice grain. The lateral and longitudinal division speed of the cell is affected by the GW8 to control the size and the length-width ratio of a husk, and the filling speed is regulated so as to affect rice yield. The GW8 can serve as a molecular marker for identifying the length-width ratio of the rice kernel and the kernel size species. The GW8 has a wide application prospect on breeding on the basis of improving rice yield and improving rice quality.
