Abstract

Disclosed are a device and method for processing a router neighbor discovery (ND) entry. The device comprises: a microcode forwarding module, for counting the number of times an ND entry is used when using said ND entry to carry out packet forwarding; a forwarding list management module, for providing the ND entry count to an ND protocol module; the ND protocol module, for reading and totaling, by means of the forwarding list management module, the ND entry count for each line card once an ND entry becomes stale and, after the window of time during which an ND entry is stale, reading and totaling again the ND entry count for each line card, then comparing the before and after totals of the two ND entry readings, and if the totals of the two ND readings are identical, then allowing the ND entry to be aged out and deleted. The present invention helps to avoid large losses of packets in the forwarding traffic arising from the lack of ND entries caused by said entries aging out, thus ensuring the normal operation of a router.
