The invention provides a method for realizing the forward compatibility of protocol versions in a 3G RRC ASN.1 structure at the UE (user equipment) side, which comprises the following steps: classifying all information elements in a 3G RRC ASN.1 structure according to the situation that whether information elements in a 3G RRC ASN.1 structure are changed in the process of version evolution; generating header file analysis tools and coding / decoding analysis tools according to the classification of the information elements; analyzing an ASN.1 structure by using the header file analysis tool so as to generate header files related to a build environment; and generating a code for realizing message coding / decoding by using the coding / decoding analysis tools and the header files related to the build environment. According to the scheme provided by the invention, normal communication between the UE and networks in different protocol versions can be realized under the condition of no network protocol version information without a plurality of sets of implementation codes and any additional manual interventions, thereby greatly reducing the maintenance cost of the codes and improving the flexibility of a protocol.
