Embodiment Construction

[0051] The present invention arose from the recognition that bone at the site of surgical intervention sometimes requires augmentation to provide sufficient mechanical strength or integrity to meet the needs of the surgical intervention. For example, the pedicles of the vertebrae may require augmentation to securely receive and accommodate the pedicle screws. Bone at the site of surgical intervention or placement, which can be normal bone, osteoporotic bone, cortical bone, cancellous bone, diseased bone, defective bone, deformed bone, bone that has been traumatized , bone requiring revision from previous surgical intervention, or any combination thereof. Generally, bone does not provide sufficient mechanical support, anchoring, or sufficient tightening force for screws, fastening devices, or other medical devices to be attached to the bone. In this case, a formable and curable implantable or prefabricated bone anchor would be a useful medical device that can improve the integ...

Abstract

Bone anchors and related methods for their use are described. The inventive anchor is suitable for placement in bone and for use in orthopedic surgery and dentistry. The bone anchor can be made from a bone / polymer or bone substitute / polymer composite, and can provide a firm and secure base for attaching a fastening device. The bone anchor can be used in various orthopedic and dental procedures including spinal surgery, where normal, cancellous, cortical, diseased or osteoporotic bone is present. The bone anchor can be resorbed and / or replaced with native bone tissue over a period of time. In certain embodiments, the bone anchor is made malleable or flowable and formed in situ or in vivo.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related U.S. Applications [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Patent Application U.S.S.N. 61 / 040,483, filed March 28, 2008, which is hereby incorporated by reference. field of invention [0003] The present invention pertains to implantable bone anchors useful in orthopedics and dentistry. Specifically, bone anchors are made of bone / polymer composites or bone substitute / polymer composites, which can be prefabricated or formed in situ prior to implantation, and optionally can be mechanically fastened After the piece is inserted into the bone anchor, it expands. The invention also provides methods of using and preparing bone anchors. Background technique [0004] Bone is a composite material composed of impure hydroxyapatite, collagen and various non-collagenous proteins, and embedded and attached cells. Bone-derived biomaterials can be used to prepare bone implants. For example, bone particles c...
