Embodiment

[0126] The present invention is further illustrated in the following examples, which are not intended to limit the scope of the invention disclosed in the claims.

[0127] To evaluate the ability of the performance monitor disclosed herein to measure the anaerobic threshold and oxygen consumption rate of subjects, a pilot study was conducted on a group of ten subjects (five males and five females). Each subject underwent a maximal cycle ergometry protocol (training intensity increased in increments of 50 W every 3 minutes). The subject stopped the test when he could no longer pedal at the required cadence. use with Figure 3A The monitor shown is the same functional monitor that collects near-infrared spectra of the lateral thigh (thigh) muscle every ten seconds. The spectrum is corrected for changes caused by skin pigmentation and the overlying fat layer.

Abstract

Methods and systems are disclosed for determining an anaerobic threshold and / or an oxygen consumption rate in a human or animal subject. The methods include exposing a tissue of the subject to illumination radiation, collecting emitted radiation from the tissue, the emitted radiation including a portion of the illumination radiation reflected or transmitted from the tissue, processing the emittedradiation to form a spectrum of the tissue, and determining, based on the spectrum of the tissue, the anaerobic threshold and / or the oxygen consumption rate of the subject.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application 60 / 949,789, filed July 13, 2007, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. [0003] Statement Regarding Federally Funded Research [0004] The present invention is completed under government support according to the authorization number SM0001 of the National Space Biomedical Research Committee. The government has certain rights in this invention. technical field [0005] The present invention relates to methods and devices for monitoring bodily functions. Background technique [0006] The effects of physiological stress on humans can be assessed by measuring the anaerobic threshold and oxygen consumption rate during exercise training. For example, both professional and non-professional athletes may attempt to quantitatively assess the effectiveness of a training session by measuring these parameters during prog...
