Embodiment Construction

[0044] The following detailed description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the invention or the application and uses of the invention. Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by any expressed or implied theory presented in the preceding technical field, background, brief summary or the following detailed description.

[0045] Referring to Figure 1, which includes Figure 1A and Figure 1B , the vehicle 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a gesture recognition capability that enables vehicle operation mode activation. For example, in Figure 1A 1 , a person 102 approaches the rear of a vehicle 100 holding a large object 104 such as a box in his / her hands. A detector 106 positioned above the left taillight and within the taillight glass visually monitors a predetermined spatial location 108 proximate to the exterior of the vehicle 100 . Although detector 106 is in Figure 1A and Figure 1B is shown within the left ...

Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for activation of a vehicle operational mode. The device includes one or more detectors and a controller. The one or more detectors visually monitor one or more predetermined spatial locations, each of the one or more detectors corresponding to one of the one or more predetermined spatial locations. The controller is coupled to the one or more detectors and activates a predetermined vehicle operational mode in response to a current vehicle operational mode and a predetermined gesture detected within one of the one or more predetermined spatial locations.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to spatial and time-based gesture recognition, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for activating various vehicle modes in response to gesture recognition. Background technique [0002] Conventional fobs have been provided for the user to activate various vehicle modes away from the vehicle, such as locking or unlocking the car, opening the trunk, and / or emergency mode of the car (activating the car horn and lights to create a threat to theft or personal visual and audible alarms for attack deterrence). However, many times the user's hands are full and it may be difficult to activate the buttons on the key fob. Also, the number of vehicle modes that can be activated is limited by the number of buttons that can fit on an ergonomically sized key fob. In addition, some vehicle modes, such as some theft detection and anti-theft modes, are generally limited by the requirement for car access or user activa...
