The invention relates to a reversible data hiding method based on a pixel grouping strategy, comprising the steps of: a transmitting party dividing every three adjoining pixels of carrier image into one group, marking whether the group is an embedded pixel group by utilizing the absolute value of the difference value among the pixels, ensuring one group characteristic bit for the each embedded pixel group; compressing the marked group characteristic bit to generate redundancy space to carry additional secret information by utilizing the characteristic that the adjoining pixel groups frequentlytrend to be consistent, and simultaneously embedding the secret data and the data for resuming the image into the pixel groups capable of being embedded with the switch operation of the pixel gray value in the pixel group; and a receiving party judging whether the pixel group is loaded with the data bit according to the pixel grouping with the same key and the absolute value of the pixel difference value in the group, determining the secret bit loaded by judging the grouping characteristic of the pixel group loaded with the data bit and resuming an original image with uncompressed characteristic. The method has higher visual hiding performance and statistics hiding performance.
