Problems solved by technology

A disadvantage of existing techniques is that some data packets are encrypted and must be decrypted before they can be analyzed
However, CK cannot be used on the same interface as grouped by RRC
[0006] A second disadvantage of the prior art is that network monitoring equipment may be widely distributed for monitoring UMTS networks
As a result, the monitor or probe that captures the CK may not be co-located with the monitor that captures RRC packets that require the CK for decryption

Embodiment Construction

[0018] The present invention provides many applicable inventive concepts that can be embodied in a wide variety of specific contexts. The specific embodiments discussed are merely descriptions of specific ways to make and use the invention, and do not limit the scope of the invention.

[0019] FIG. 1 illustrates a portion of a UMTS 100 network comprising a Node B 101 and a Radio Network Controller (RNC) 102 . Node B 101 communicates with RNC 102 through Iub interface 103 . RNCs 102 communicate with each other via Iur interface 104 . Node B 101 communicates with User Equipment (UE) 105 over an air interface Uu 106 . Whenever a UE 105 sends or receives a call, signaling messages are exchanged between the Node B 101 and the RNC 102 over the Iub interface 103 and, for some calls, between the RNCs 102 over the Iur interface 104 . RNC 102 and Node B 101 form the UTRAN part of UMTS network 100 . A UTRAN monitor or probe 107 is coupled to the Iub and Iur interfaces 103 and 104 in ...

Abstract

System and method for forwarding a ciphering key to a decipher application comprising capturing a first message carrying the ciphering key from a first network interface, identifying a network node associated with the first network interface, identifying a monitor responsible for processing messages captured from interfaces coupled to the network node, and forwarding the ciphering key to the monitor. In an alternative embodiment, the method may further comprise capturing second messages carrying encrypted messages from a second network interface, and deciphering the second messages using the ciphering key. The method may also comprise identifying user equipment associated with the first messages, and selecting a deciphering application running on the monitor using a user equipment identity.

Description

[0001] This application requires an application on March 30, 2007, named System and Method for Ciphering Key Forwarding and RRC Packet Deciphering in a UMTS Monitoring System (system and method for key forwarding and RRC packet deciphering in UMTS monitoring system) in the United States Benefit of Provisional Application No. 60 / 909,282, which is hereby incorporated by reference. field of invention [0002] The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for monitoring messages in wireless systems, and more particularly to systems and methods for forwarding ciphering keys captured at a core network to a monitor for decrypting messages in UTRAN Captured RRC packets. Background technique [0003] Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation (3G) mobile telephony technology first standardized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and now by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). UMTS utilizes Wideband C...
