Embodiment Construction

[0029]Embodiments discussed below manage the binding between MSI resources and interrupt facilities in order to facilitate sharing of MSI resources by multiple clients. As will be more apparent from the following, some embodiments according to the present invention support dynamic binding management so that MSI bindings can be dynamically created at runtime, particularly in response to client requests. Additionally, in some embodiments consistent with the present invention, management of MSI bindings may be performed by a platform-independent interrupt manager that interfaces with the hardware platform through a platform-specific wrapper. However, it should be appreciated that in some embodiments of the present invention, dynamic binding functionality and platform independence may be implemented separately from each other.

[0030] The embodiments described in detail below are implemented using components that are the main system firmware, and can manage each MSI hardware inte...

Abstract

An apparatus, program product and method dynamically bind Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) resources shared by a plurality of clients to an interrupt facility in an MSI-capable computer. In addition, management of such bindings may be implemented using a platform independent interrupt manager capable of managing multiple MSI bindings between MSI resources to an interrupt facility, and interfaced with an underlying hardware platform of a computer through platform-specific encapsulation program code.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to computers and computer software, and more particularly to processing interrupts generated in input / output structures of computers or computer systems. Background technique [0002] As today's society relies more and more on computers, computer technology has evolved on many fronts to keep up with the ever-increasing performance requirements and the increasingly important place of trust assigned to computers. In particular, computers are increasingly used in high-performance and mission-critical applications where large amounts of processing must be continuously performed, and any downtime is simply unacceptable. [0003] Increasing performance often requires the use of faster and more complex hardware components. Furthermore, in many applications, multiple hardware components, such as processors and peripheral components such as storage devices, network connections, etc., work in parallel in order to increase overall s...
