Embodiment Construction

[0015] 1 is one example of a wireless communication network 100 in which multiple antenna receive diversity can be used. A mobile station (MS) 110 , mobile or stationary, may communicate with one or more base stations (BSs) 120 . Mobile stations 110 , referred to herein as “mobiles,” transmit and receive voice or data or both through one or more BSs 120 connected to a base station controller (BSC) 130 . BS 120 and BSC 130 are part of a network called an Access Network (AN). BSC 130 is connected to wired network 140, which may include any of a variety of circuit technologies. The access network communicates voice or data to and between BSs 120 . The access network may further be connected to an additional network other than the access network, such as a wired telephone system, a corporate intranet, or the Internet, which forms part of the wired network 140 . The access network can transport voice and data between each visiting mobile device 110 and the external network. A m...

Abstract

Receiver diversity in a wireless device is controlled in response to operating conditions, transmission requirements, and control settings. The control of diversity reduces power consumption by enabling receive diversity on given conditions. Operating conditions, transmission requirements, and control settings are used separately or used in conjunction to determine whether benefits of multi-antenna receive diversity, such as higher link capacity, higher data throughput, lower transmit power, and lower error rate, warrant the higher power cost of the diversity.

Description

[0001] Priority claims under 35 U.S.C.119 [0002] This application claims Provisional Application No. 60 / 550,756, filed March 5, 2004, entitled "METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR RECEIVER DIVERSITY CONTROL IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS," and Provisional Application No. 60 / 583,902, filed June 28, 2004 Priority titled "METHOD ANDAPPARATUS FOR RECEIVER DIVERSITY CONTROL IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS" is assigned to the assignee and is hereby expressly incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to wireless communications, and, more particularly, to multi-antenna receive diversity in wireless communications systems. Background technique [0004] Mobile multi-antenna receive diversity refers to the use of multiple receivers in a wireless communication device. Different antennas provide input to each individual receiver, thereby providing communication link diversity. This diversity improves call and data transmission quality and also increases ...
