example 1

[0419] Make a query to check if the address below exists in the database.

[0420] "12 / 34 Pitt Street, NSW, Sydney"

[0421] By generating a text object on this input and establishing low-level matching properties:

[0422] "12"

[0423] "34"

[0424] "Pete"

[0425] "street"

[0426] "Sydney"

[0427] "NSW"

[0428] Analysis of the intersection of all index entries retrieved using the above attribute type identifiers and values will produce the records at the beginning of this section.

example 2

[0430] Make a query to find all addresses that contain a street:

[0431] "Pitt Street"

[0432] Create a text object on this input and generate an index key set:

[0433] "Pete"

[0434] "street"

[0435] Here, analysis of the intersection of all index entries retrieved using the attribute type identifiers and values described above will yield the correct secondary group of records, including the record at the beginning of this section.

[0436] The above example is very simple, the purpose is to demonstrate the concept. In the actual system, once the low-level matching key set is generated, all the techniques in the "keyword search" can be used for each attribute type sub-set. For details on the "Keyword Search" technique, see the book and magazine article by Gerald Salton.

[0437] The "keyword search" technology applicable to the present invention has:

Abstract

A method and apparatus for processing free-format data (301) to produce a "text object" associated with the free-format data. The text object comprises a plurality of "component nodes" (302-312) containing attribute-type identifiers for elements of the free-format text and other data facilitating access to the text object to obtain information and / or change or add the free-format data. This arrangement obviates the need for the provision of separate database fields for each element of the information. Free-format data can therefore be processed in a similar manner to the way a human being processes free-format data. All elements can be accessed via the constructed text object.

Description

[0001] The present invention relates generally to the processing, storage and analysis of information in the form of free-form data, and in particular, but not exclusively, to methods and apparatus for interpreting free-form text. Background of the invention [0002] One of the main purposes of a computer system is to manage information. This information management is realized through the data management system inside the computer. [0003] In general, data management systems can be divided into two categories: 1) database management systems; and 2) text search and retrieval systems. [0004] The first type of data management system stores data in a specific format inside the computer so that the data can be preserved and further edited. When required, these systems will represent the data in a specific format for humans to read the data or for other systems to use the data. Data management systems in this category include: hierarchical, network, relational, object database ...
