Embodiment Construction

[0031] figure 1 A preferred embodiment of the auxiliary belt drive system 10 is shown in . It includes motor / generator 12, motor / generator pulley 14, power steering pump pulley 18, air conditioning compressor pulley 20, water pump pulley 22, crankshaft pulley 24, first tensioner 26, first tensioner 28, The second tensioning device 27 , the second tensioning pulley 29 and the power transmission belt 30 . The portion of the power transmission belt 30 that would obscure the first tensioner 26 or the second tensioner 27 is broken in the figure.

[0032] Although specific auxiliary pulleys are described for use in specific geometric arrangements, it should be recognized that the invention is applicable to various combinations of auxiliary devices and geometric arrangements, including serpentine and non-serpentine configurations, depending on the particular application . The described structure is serpentine. Therefore, the power transmission belt 30 is generally a v-rib type. ...

Abstract

The invention is an improved belt drive system and method for a power pant. The power plant is of the type having a crankshaft pulley (24), an accessory pulley (18, 20, 22), a motor / generator pulley (14), a first belt tensioner (26), a first belt tensioner pulley (28), and a power transmission belts (30) trained about the crankshaft pulley, the accessory pulley, the motor / generator pulley, and the first belt tensioner pulley. The power transmission belt has spans defined by termination proximate to each of the pulleys. These spans include intermediate spans beginning at the crankshaft pulley and ending at the motor / generator pulley, following the direction of belt ravel in normal operation. The intermediate spans include a first intermediate span having a crankshaft termination proximate the crankshaft pulley and a last intermediate span having a first motor / generator termination proximate the motor / generator pulley. The system is improved by the power transmission belt also having a start-slack-side span beginning at the motor / generator pulley, following the direction of belt ravel in normal operation. The start-slack-side span has a second motor / generator termination proximate the motor / generator pulley and a downstream termination opposite of the second motor / generator termination. The system has the first tensioner pulley proximate a termination of an intermediate span not being either the crankshaft termination or the first motor / generator termination. The system also has a second tensioner pulley (29) proximate the downstream termination.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to internal combustion engine auxiliary belt drive systems, each having an integral device performing both engine starting and generating functions, such as a motor / generator sometimes referred to as a generator-starter (Gen-Star). In particular, the invention relates to such systems used in automobiles. In particular, the invention relates to an arrangement for belt drive systems each having a motor / generator and tensioning devices. Background technique [0002] Internal combustion engines typically use a power transmission belt drive system to take power from the engine crankshaft and deliver it to one or more of the various engine auxiliaries or auxiliary equipment. In the automotive world, these auxiliary equipment include power steering pumps, water pumps, air conditioning compressors, fuel pumps and alternators. In the past, this type of engine had the main power take-off on the crankshaft protruding from...
