Embodiment Construction

[0024] 1. equipment

[0025] figure 1 is a perspective view of an exemplary embodiment of the medical device 10 of the present invention. The device 10 includes a stem portion 12 having a smoothly rounded proximal end 30 and an electrode (eg, a segmented RF array) 20, which may be a grid or plate, and a distal end 30. At the proximal end 32 of the stem portion 12 is a generally conical portion 34 with threads 36 so that the cable supplying the input electrical signal to the electrode 20 can be securely secured to the stem portion 12 . For explicit purposes, proximal end 32 is the end at which a physician or other treatment professional holds the device, and distal end 30 is the end opposite distal end 32 . In one embodiment, the stem portion 12 is about 14.5 cm long and about 2.5 cm wide. More generally, the stem portion may be about 8-20 cm long and about 1.5-4 cm wide.

[0026] The stem portion 12 has a plurality of visible longitudinal graduations 16 marked thereon, a...

Abstract

A device and method for treating female urinary incontinence and also for treating fecal incontinence are presented. A fractional RF grid array is used to heat target tissue to a temperature of about40 - 45 DEG C for a specified period of time, thus stimulating fibroblasts to produce type 1 collagen preferably without producing significant amounts of type 3 collagen. The device includes a temperature sensor and a control circuit to maintain the desired temperature of the target tissue and avoid overheating. Target tissue includes tissue in and around the urethra, and in and around the anus including the perineum. The wand to which the RF grid array is mounted has visible gradations on it so that the user can treat one area at a time, then reliably move the grid array to the next adjacentarea even though the grid array is hidden from view inside a portion of the body. The device can also be used for vaginoplasty.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of medical therapy. More specifically, the present invention relates to the field of treatment of urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic prolapse and pelvic pain, and other medical conditions, as well as methods for the treatment of these conditions. equipment. Background technique [0002] Many different approaches have been proposed to treat urinary incontinence in women. Nonsurgical approaches that have been proposed include electrical stimulation, behavior modification, pelvic floor reinforcement through exercise and vaginal weight cones, and drug therapy (estrogens and alpha-adrenergic agonists). Surgical methods include surgical implantation of sling materials using polypropylene mesh, periurethral injection of various materials including Polytef paste and GAX collagen. Other injectables include autologous adipose tissue and silicone microimplants. Injectables have been used to manage stress urinary ...
