Embodiment 1

[0192]A polycarbonate canopy used on an F-22A jet was lightly ground to increase its surface roughness and surface area for receiving a primer (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, an adhesion Accelerator). Primer was gravity applied to the canopy. Next, a polymer solution (FX-430, produced by PPG Industries, Inc.) was applied to the canopy by flow coating to form an adhesive layer (tie coat). The polymer solution was poured from the top of the canopy and from end to end so that the solution flowed down and flowed by gravity to coat the canopy. Excess polymer solution was allowed to flow down into a dripping pan and collected for proper disposal.

[0193] After the entire exterior surface of the canopy has been coated, it is cured in a heated oven at about 230°F for about 5 hours. After the coating has cured, the canopy is ground to increase its surface area for receiving the next coat, then cleaned with isopropyl alcohol (IPA). A silane primer (silane-based layer) was then appli...

Abstract

A coated substrate is disclosed, comprising: a substrate; a conductive multilayer stack on the substrate; and a coating on the conductive multilayer stack. The coating thickness is 5-10 mils, and the coating comprises a conductive, antistatic bond coat on the conductive multilayer stack; and on the conductive, antistatic bond coat conductive, antistatic top coat. The conductive, antistatic bond coat and conductive, antistatic top coat are formed from a coating composition comprising a hydrophobic first aliphatic polyisocyanate, a second hydrophilic moiety Aliphatic polyisocyanates, polyester polyols, hydrophilic polyols and fluorinated polyol compounds.

Description

[0001] Statement Regarding Potential National Security Concerns [0002] This application contains subject matter that may be controlled under the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations ("ITAR"), 22 CFR Para. 120-130. Accordingly, this application should be considered a mandatory secrecy order by the appropriate federal agency. [0003] Background of the invention [0004] Polyurethane polymers can be used as coatings in a variety of applications. For example, they can be used as coatings for coated substrates, for example coated transparencies of aircraft. Aircraft transparencies (eg, canopies) and especially stealth aircraft canopies preferably include a low resistance (ie, high conductivity) layer (or layers) to prevent or reduce static charge buildup and provide radar attenuation. Static charges can build up on the canopy as a result of precipitation static and / or lightning strikes and can interfere with different functions of the aircraft. By including a low resis...
