Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a multilevel power converter 1 comprising at least one phase leg. The phase leg comprises a plurality of cascaded chain-link connected cells 2, each cell comprising a capacitor 3 and two semiconductor switches 5 connected in series, each semiconductor switch 5 having a diode 6 connected in anti-parallel. The plurality of cascaded chain-link connected cells comprises a first cell 2a and a second cell 2b forming a mirrored cell pair such that both semiconductor switches of each of the first cell and the second cell are connected in series with each other. The converter also comprises an energy store 4 connected between the first unit and the second unit.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a multilevel power converter including at least one phase leg. A phase leg comprises a plurality of cascaded chain-link connected cells, each cell comprising a capacitor and two semiconductor switches in series, each semiconductor switch having a diode connected in anti-parallel. Background technique [0002] Modular multilevel converters have become popular due to their high efficiency, modularity and scalability, and ability to generate voltage waveforms with low harmonic content, which effectively reduces the need for large AC filters. [0003] Several modular multilevel converter topologies exist, of which M2LC (also known as MMLC and MMC) is one of the most popular topologies, especially in high voltage direct current (HVDC) applications and motor drives etc. [0004] WO2010 / 124706 and WO2011 / 060823 disclose conventional half-bridge converter units and H-bridge converter units for M2LC, with a battery connected t...
