Embodiment Construction

[0019] Figure 1A is a block diagram of a system 100 for managing 3D printing. System 100 may include designer device 102 , server 104 , client device 106 , and printer controller 108 . Designer device 102, server 104, client device 106, and 3D printer controller 108 may communicate with each other over a network (eg, a local area network or a wide area network). Communication can be in the form of Application Programming Interface (API) calls or JavaScript Object Notation (JSON).

[0020] Designer device 102 may be a notebook, desktop computer, tablet computer, or some other computing device that may be used by a designer to design objects and save data about the designed objects. For example, a designer may use 3D stereolithography computer-aided design (CAD) software to model a screw and store the model as a file in a stereolithography (STL) format. The designer device 102 can display a graphical user interface through which the designer can upload data specifying the sh...

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention generally relate to 3D printing protected by digital rights management. In particular, it relates to methods, systems and apparatuses, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media for managing 3D printing. Methods, systems, and apparatus include the acts of receiving a request for an object stored by a server; providing information describing the object; receiving a request for digital rights to print the object; and providing a description of the digital rights to print the object. Additional actions include: receiving a request to print a specific object by a specific printer; determining whether digital permissions for printing the specific object allow fulfillment of the request to print the specific object by a specific printer; generating printer instructions for printing the object; and connecting the printer to the printer. Instructions are provided to the printer controller that controls a specific printer.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority from European Application No. 15290265.6, filed 16.10.2015, entitled "3-D Printing Protected by Digital Rights Management", which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to managing 3D printing. Background technique [0004] A 3D printer can print an object according to instructions that define how the object should be printed. For example, a 3D printer may print a screw using a G-code file that stores instructions for the 3D printer to print the screw. A G-code file for one type of 3D printer may not be compatible with another type of 3D printer. Additionally, the user can use the 3D printer and the object's corresponding G-code file to print the object as many times as the user desires. Contents of the invention [0005] In summary, an aspect of the subject matter described in this specification may relate to a proce...
