Embodiment Construction

[0019] figure 1 A sugarcane harvester 10 is shown comprising a frame 12 having endless tracks 14 for powering directional movement over a field 16 . Frame 12 is powered by a suitable form of engine, typically an internal combustion engine. The endless track 14 provides movement over a field 16 as well as steering. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various propulsion units and ground moving means (such as wheels) may be used with the frame 12 to enable the harvester to move over the field for harvesting sugar cane.

[0020] A topper assembly 18 extends forwardly from the frame 12 to cut off the tops of the sugarcane stalks to facilitate harvesting. The crop row divider assembly 20 includes a pair of rollers that separate the crop and move the cane stalks in a downstream direction relative to the forward motion of the frame 12, wherein a pair of disc cutter assemblies 22 Cut the base of the cane stem. The disc cutter assembly 22 generally consists of overl...

Abstract

A multiple row sugar cane harvester having automatic and independent control of multiple base cutters utilized to severe sugar cane stalks in adjacent rows. Position sensors sense the height of the base cutters relative to the chassis of the sugar cane harvester and feed the signals to a controller for adjusting the height to a preselected level. The base cutters are individually driven by hydraulic motors through individual hydraulic circuits and the operating pressure is sensed and fed to the controller for determining whether a choke condition exists. A load sensor is incorporated between the linkage and the sugar cane harvester chassis for determining whether the base cutters have ground contact to elevate the base cutters.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a sugarcane harvester, and more particularly to a harvester of the type that handles multiple rows. Background technique [0002] When harvesting sugar cane, one of the key elements of the equipment is the disc cutter. The disc cutter is the part that cuts off the sugarcane stalk for delivery by the harvester to subsequent processing steps. Ideally, when using a disc cutter it is as close to the ground as possible to cut the cane stalks and not get blocked by the roots and the ground. Due to variations in topography and soil composition, the height of the disc cutters needs to be adjusted to an optimum height during field operations. Various existing approaches have utilized various devices to control the height of the disc cutters. These means may take the form of optical position sensors as known in the art, as well as other approaches. [0003] The problem with adjusting the height of the disc cutters is that it ...
