Embodiment Construction

[0019] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth. However, it is understood that embodiments of the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known circuits, structures and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of this description. However, one skilled in the art will recognize that the present invention may be practiced without such specific details. Those of ordinary skill in the art, with the included description, will be able to implement appropriate functionality without undue experimentation.

[0020] Embodiments of the present invention provide enhancements to the PIM-SM-based IP fast rerouting technology. When a network failure occurs, multicast data traffic is rerouted via one or more redundant secondary paths. These secondary paths are precomputed prior to failure, and forwarding information along the primary and secondary paths is stored in the data ...

Abstract

A failure detection mechanism provides enhancements to PIM-SM based fast re-route techniques. A network node upon detecting a loss of connection determines whether it can re-route multicast data traffic. If the network node does not have a failure-free secondary path, it can originate a notification packet and send it to the downstream parts of a multicast tree. The notification packet can trigger one or more downstream nodes to switch-over to redundant secondary paths to re-route the multicast data traffic.

Description

[0001] This application is related to an application entitled "ENHANCEMENTS TO PIM FAST RE-ROUTE WITH UPSTREAM ACTIVATION PACKETS" (Attorney Record No. 4906P37637US1) and an application entitled "INCREASING FAILURE COVERAGE OF MOFRR WITH DATA PLANE NOTIFICATIONS" (Attorney Record No. 4906P36756US1), both filed on June 1, 2012. technical field [0002] Embodiments of the present invention relate to the field of network operations; and more specifically, to routing operations in multicast communication networks. Background technique [0003] Protocol Independent Multicast Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) (see IETF RFC4601 August 2006) is a well-known and commonly adopted protocol for constructing and maintaining multicast trees in Internet Protocol (IP) multicast communication networks. To distribute multicast content to receiving nodes (hereinafter also referred to as "destinations") of a multicast communication network, PIM-SM uses a single multicast tree. A single multicast tree lacks...
