Embodiment Construction

[0063] figure 1 The applicator shown in has an applicator body 10, and a cylindrical preloaded container 11. The applicator body is made of polypropylene. The applicator body is attached to the rear edge 12 of an almost flat applicator pad 13 . The padding is polyurethane foam. The litter is triangular with rounded corners. The pad has two opposing faces for applying the liquid.

[0064]The applicator body extends outwardly and upwardly from the applicator pad. The angle between the upper coating surface and the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical container was about 135°. A handle 14 is provided on the applicator body. The handle is positioned to facilitate the user holding the device in an orientation that allows the component liquid to flow downward. Arrow markings 15 are provided on the container body to assist in correct insertion into the receiving structure 20 of the applicator body 10 .

Abstract

A surgical preparation applicator device has a pre-loaded container (11) of surgical preparation liquid, the container (11) having a front closure (22) at its front end. The container is received in a tubular applicator body (10) and can be pushed from an initial position to an open position whereby a rearwardly- projecting cutter (31,32) of the applicator body (10) opens the front closure to allow liquid to flow forwardly to an applicator pad (13), the applicator body (10) defining a flow path between the container (11) and the applicator pad (13). The container (11) has plural separate chambers (111,112) containing different component liquids of the surgical preparation liquid, the chambers being side-by-side, so that the chambers (111,112) are opened together by respective spaced cutters. The cutters (31,32) have sloping toothed edges and are shaped to cut around part of the periphery of each chamber, leaving flaps of closure layer which are pushed out of the way by sweeper projections (34,35) next to the cutters.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an applicator for applying a surgical prep or treatment fluid to the skin, sometimes referred to as a surgical prep applicator. Background technique [0002] Routine preparations for procedures on a patient's skin include a long preparation for cleaning with soap etc. followed by application of an antiseptic or disinfectant. The nature, duration and difficulty of such tasks depend critically on the type of surgical procedure to be performed subsequently, as well as the size, shape and orientation of the body parts involved. [0003] The oldest and still most common method of applying antiseptics is by dipping a swab held in tweezers, a sponge or pad into a liquid pan and rubbing it over the skin. Used swabs / pads are continually being discarded while new swabs / pads are obtained. Disinfectants are usually alcohol-based and may contain ingredients that can irritate or burn the skin (eg, tincture of iodine). It is import...
