Embodiment Construction

[0038] The two methods according to the present invention will be described in detail below. Both methods exemplify an AUV bank or basket delivered to the seabed, although the invention can be used with other supplies requiring delivery to or recovery from the seabed or other subsea locations, including midwater locations. In each case, the subsea location is fully submerged or below the surface such that the material is fully submerged while connected to the lift line at that location.

[0039] The first method leaves the materiel attached to the lift line and will refer to figure 1 The first method is described. The materiel in this example is an AUV basket that can simply launch and / or recover an AUV (not shown) during a brief stay on the seabed where the basket remains connected to a support vessel by a lift line.

[0040] refer to Figure 2 to Figure 9 The second method described is an extension of the first method. It allows material to be left on the seabed or relea...

Abstract

A locking unit (38) carries subsea assets, such as AUVs or AUV depots, by water from an underwater location to assets (22). The locking unit (38) carries the lift line (20) towards the material (22). The locking unit (38) is then attached to the material (22), and the material (22) is lifted by the pulling force applied through the lifting line (20) via the locking unit (38). The locking unit (38) can also be used on the lift line to lower and subsequently release the material in a submerged position. The lift line (20) is supported by the heave compensating crank (12) on the surface vessel which enables the z-axis movement of the locking unit (38). Rocking handle (12) keeps the pulling force on the lift line (20) to prevent the lift line (20) from falling on the material. Movement of the locking unit (38) in the x and y axes is achieved by on-board pushers (48).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the delivery of material to and recovery from subsea locations, including seabed and midwater locations. The present invention relates to specific applications in launch and recovery systems (LARS) for submersibles, such as building autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), when deep water engines operate. Background technique [0002] Examples of LARS or AUVs are described in the applicant's previously filed patent application published as GB 2453645. Here, the AUVs are deployed on a diving station, which can also be described as a dock or garage for the AUVs. The platform to which the AUV is launched swings overboard from a support vessel on a line lift and quickly descends into the water. In this regard, it is advantageous to minimize the time spent passing through the turbulent splash zone near the water surface. Otherwise, the slack in the lift line may result in a grab load when the AUV / platform combination passes...
