Embodiment Construction

[0051] The present invention is described below in conjunction with one or more embodiments. The examples are intended to illustrate the invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention. It should be understood by those skilled in the art that the present invention is intended to include various equivalents and modifications.

[0052] As a prelude to a discussion of various embodiments of the invention, a general discussion of MRI apparatus follows. This summary is not intended to limit the invention. It is provided only to aid in understanding the various components of the various embodiments of the invention, described in detail below.

[0053] As a general principle, an MRI apparatus includes: a magnetic field generator, usually a magnetic coil; and a radio frequency ("RF") generator or transmitter. The magnetic coil generates a time-varying magnetic field, while the RF generator emits radio waves. MRI devices typically also apply a static magnetic fie...

Abstract

A magnetic field generator includes a power source and a coil connected to the power source to generate a time-varying magnetic field. Energy is applied to the coil so that the coil generates a time- varying magnetic field gradient with a magnitude of at least 1 milliTesla per meter and a rise-time of less than 10 microseconds. One or more of a capacitor, a multi-stage high-voltage switch, and / or a pulse-forming network may assist with the generation of the magnetic field gradient.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This PCT application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 074,397, filed June 20, 2008, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a device and method for reducing the biological effects of magnetic field gradients on tissue(s). More particularly, the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for reducing the biological effects of magnetic field gradients, such as those experienced during magnetic resonance imaging ("MRI"), on neural tissue. Background technique [0004] Those skilled in the art will appreciate that MRI is a technique for applying magnetic field gradients to subatomic particles within tissue to spatially encode the subsequent responses of atoms and molecules within the tissue to radio frequency pulses. Upon detection of an electromagnetic response from the tissue, an image of the tissue...
