Problems solved by technology

However, due to the failure record of biocompatible polymers articulating on their own, the prior art has not, out of caution, proposed self-articulating PEEK on PEEK as an appropriate material combination in load-bearing joint replacement devices.

Embodiment Construction

[0141] In a preferred embodiment, for example Figure 1-4 As shown in , the artificial disc device 001 includes an upper shell 100 and a lower shell 110 . The upper case 100 includes a substantially concave recess 120 , and the lower case 110 includes a substantially convex protrusion 130 . Although not preferred, the concave and convex portions can be reversed such that the upper housing 100 optionally includes the convex portion 130 .

[0142]The convex portion 130 includes a convex articulating surface 131 and the concave portion 120 includes a concave articulating surface 121 . It is preferred that articulating surfaces 121 and 131 have substantially matching geometries or radii of curvature, although some mismatch in curvature may be required to provide the combined rolling and sliding motion that occurs between articulating surfaces 120 and 121 . The geometry can be complex in practice, but spherical and socket shapes are preferred. The convex portion 130 and the conc...

Abstract

A prosthetic spinal implant having a deployable securing mechanism that is deployable into a portion of the vertebral space for affixing the implant between the vertebrae, the securing mechanism having tactile feedback means comprising a surface for transmitting tactile feedback during deployment of the securing mechanism. A spinal implant having deployable securing means that interface with the implant to prevent the deployable securing means from retracting after deployment. An implant that utilizes its resilient properties to provide the user with tactile feedback with which the user may ascertain the position of the securing mechanism. A system and tools for sizing and implanting implants with the aforementioned characteristics.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 825,865, filed September 15, 2006, and U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 912,138, filed April 16, 2007, both of which are incorporated by reference in their entirety Incorporated into this article. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to systems and methods for sizing an intervertebral space and placing an appropriately sized implant therein, and more particularly, to systems and methods for sizing, inserting and securing an implant in an intervertebral space. Background technique [0004] Joint aging is a general problem that can occur in all joints throughout the body. This condition is typically more common as the skeletal system ages and often requires medication and physical therapy. These conservative treatments sometimes have only limited success. If unsuccessful, the patient will typically continue to experience pain and ...
