Problems solved by technology

Thus, efficient operation of the IP control protocol based on Ethernet over which messages are broadcast is not ensured in E-UMTS networks where control information is only communicated in a dedicated path between the UE and the network
Also, L3 handover suffers from long latency and large packet loss

Embodiment Construction

[0020] In order to help fully understand the exemplary embodiments of the present invention, matters such as detailed structures and elements defined in the specification are provided. Accordingly, those of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that various changes and modifications of the embodiments described herein can be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. Also, descriptions of well-known functions and constructions are omitted for clarity and conciseness.

[0021] The present invention is intended to enable handover between network entities by sending IP address control to the UE using L2 signaling messages from an ATM-based control plane instead of using an IP control protocol such as Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). information to ensure UE IP address mobility. Here, a description will be given of an exemplary embodiment of the present invention in which L3 control information, such as IP layer control information required for...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for performing an inter-RAN L2 handover and an inter-CN L3 handover in a packet-switched network are provided. When a UE connected to an old CN through the old RAN moves to a new RAN belonging to a new CN, an old RAN sends a handover required message to a new RAN. The new RAN acquires a new IP address for the UE from the new CN and sends a handover command message including the new IP address to the old RAN. The old RAN forwards the handover command message comprising an address of the new RAN to the UE. The UE performs an inter-RAN handover in response to the handover command message, to communicate with the old CN through the new RAN and performs an inter-CN handover based on the new IP address to communicate with the new CN through the new RAN.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a packet switched network. More specifically, the present invention relates to a layer 2 (L2) handover for simultaneously performing a layer 2 (L2) handover between radio access networks (RAN) and a layer 3 (L3) handover between CN entities between core networks Method and apparatus for switching. Background technique [0002] The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UTMS) is a third-generation (3G) asynchronous mobile communication system based on the European Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and operating in Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) mode. ) provides a unified service for sending packetized text, digital voice or video, and multimedia data to mobile or computer users at a data rate of 2 Mbps or more, regardless of their location. By introducing the concept of virtual access, UMTS enables access to any endpoint within the n...
