[0024] As described herein, the devices and methods of the present invention advantageously increase neuron-electrode coupling efficiency by locally reducing the gap between the nerve cell and the electrode surface. The use of columnar structures protruding from the electrode surface reduces the gap between nerve cells and the electrode surface to allow and facilitate interfacing of neural tissue in, for example, implantable neurostimulating medical devices. The invention can be extended to any application requiring electrical coupling to single or multiple cells in order to sense or stimulate cells.
