The invention discloses a method for obtaining application data of a set-top box and a device thereof, wherein the method comprises the following steps: the application data which needs to be obtained is set by a user; the set-top box searches a network information table (NIT) in a main frequency point to find the frequency point information of the application data; a program assist table (PAT) is searched in the frequency point to find a program map table (PMT) of the application data which can be obtained in the present information flow; the program map table is analyzed to obtain a packet identification code (PID) of the data packet of the application data; the corresponding data packet is obtained according to the packet identification code; the obtained data packet is combined to the application data and preserved into the set-top box. The invention solves the technical problem that the set top box can not carry out function expanding and updating as required by users. Through providing the function for users to select expanding or updating the set-top box, the invention realizes the download and application of the application data to the set-top box and riches the application of the set-top box.
