Problems solved by technology

[0006] While these medical devices have specific advantages, their overall size, especially diameter and transport profile, is a significant disadvantage that prevents some uses of these devices
Another significant disadvantage is the limited flexibility of these devices for guiding pathways through small and / or tortuous vessels

Embodiment Construction

[0021] The present invention discloses thin film medical devices that are particularly well suited for occluding aneurysms or side branches of vessels, or incisions in body cavities or ducts such as arteries or veins. An advantage of the present invention is to provide a biocompatible graft material that enables less invasive delivery of medical devices to the vascular site for occluded blood flow while still allowing blood to flow through the implant site of the main vessel.

[0022] While this specification provides a detailed description for implanting a medical device into an artery or vein, those skilled in the art will appreciate that modifications of the disclosed invention are well suited for use on other body cavities and anatomical passages. , such as those located in the cavities and anatomical passages of the body of the vasculature, lymphatic system, endocrine system, renal system, gastrointestinal system, and or reproductive system.

Abstract

The present invention relates to an intraluminal thin film medical device particularly well suited for occlusion of an aneurysm, vessel side branch or dissection of a body lumen or duct, such as an artery or vein. The medical device has a thin film tube capable of being longitudinally stretched by the application of mechanical energy to achieve a smaller circumferential profile, and self-expand to the pre-stretched length and diameter upon release of the mechanical energy. To assist the thin film during expansion a plurality of slots are incised in the tube wall. The slots open and assist the thin film tube to longitudinally stretch, and substantially close when the thin film tube self-expands to the pre-stretched length and diameter.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to thin film medical devices, and in particular to intraluminal thin film medical devices and delivery systems. This medical device and delivery system is particularly well suited for the occlusion of aneurysms, side branches of vessels or cavities of the body or openings of conduits such as arteries or veins. Background technique [0002] There are many instances when it is desired to permanently occlude a vessel in the human body. Examples when permanent vessel occlusion is desired include: occlusion of an aneurysm or side branch vessel; therapeutic occlusion or embolization of a renal artery; occlusion of a Blalock-Taussig shunt; pulmonary arteriovenous fistula and transjugular intrahepatic stenting Occlusion of shunts; some non-vascular applications such as therapeutic ureteral occlusion; and occlusion of vessels supplying large cancerous tumors. [0003] In the past, certain coiled stents, stent grafts or detachable...
