Ligation clip and clip applier

The ligation clip applicator and ligation clip design are provided which are particularly applicable to placement of a surgical ligation clip during a laparoscopic surgical procedure. The clip includes a support member and a clamping arm having enlarged portions thereon. The applicator device has a magazine including first and second longitudinally extending partially closed channels within which the enlarged portions of the support member and the clamping arm are received with the clip held in an open position. First and second articulated jaws are attached to the magazine and have first and second channel extensions therein aligned with the first and second channels of the magazine, so that a clip can be received from the magazine in the jaws with the first and second enlarged portions of the support member and the clamping arm being received in the first and second channel extensions of the jaws. The channel extensions include first and second releasing openings. The jaws are closed about a vessel to pre-clamp the vessel. The clip is pushed forward into the jaws to a position where the enlarged portions of the support member and the clamping arm are aligned with the releasing openings and the support member and the clamping arm are released allowing the support member and the clamping arm to move toward each other to ligate the vessel therebetween.

Surgical ligation clip and method for use thereof

The clip applier of the current invention solves the problems of prior art tools by incorporating a pre-clamp mechanism, the function of which is to pre-clamp the vessel to be ligated to a dimension such that the center leg of the spring of the ligation clip need be lifted only slightly. In this manner the spring clip can be slid over the smaller pre-clamped dimension. This insures that the clip spring material will remain within its elastic limit while allowing the tool to maintain a low profile for use in endoscopic surgery, even on large diameter vessels.

Ligation clip applier

A ligation clip applicator design is provided that is particularly applicable to placement of a surgical ligation clip during a laparoscopic surgical procedure. The applicator has a magazine including first and second longitudinally extending partially closed channels within which enlarged portions of a ligation clip are received and held in an open position. First and second substantially parallel compression members are attached to the magazine and have first and second channel extensions therein aligned with the first and second channels of the magazine for receiving the first and second enlarged portions of the clip. The channel extensions include first and second releasing openings. The compression members close about a vessel, remaining substantially parallel as they close. The clip is pushed forward into the compression members to a position where the enlarged portions of the clip are aligned with the releasing openings, permitting the clip to be released to close and ligate the vessel.

Narrow Profile Surgical Ligation Clip

A narrow profile surgical ligation clip has two legs with clamping surfaces joined by a hinge near the proximal ends, allowing the clip to reversibly open and close. A locking mechanism is proximal to the hinge to bias or lock the clip closed, including first and second jaw structures spaced on opposite sides of a longitudinal axis of the clip thereby defining a locking space therebetween. A clip applying apparatus is provided which includes a jaw mechanism supported within and extending from the distal end of a body portion of the apparatus. The jaw mechanism includes a proximal body portion, first and second shank members and first and second jaw members. The first and second jaw members are supported on the distal end of the first and second shank members and are configured to receive a ligation clip therebetween. A method for accessing and ligating tissue is also disclosed wherein the clip applying apparatus described above is positioned adjacent tissue to be ligated and the jaws are moved between the tissue to be ligated and surrounding tissue to manipulate and / or reposition the tissue. The jaw mechanism can be rotated to position the tissue to be ligated between the first and second jaws to ligate and / or crimp a ligation clip about the tissue to be ligated.

The invention provides a ligation clip. The ligation clip comprises a first arc-shaped clip arm and a second arc-shaped clip arm. The free end of the first arc-shaped clip arm is provided with a clamping hook. The free end of the second arc-shaped clip arm is provided with a clamping head.
