Benefits of technology

The new grapevine variety, called IFG Thirty-four, is being introduced because of its large, seedless berries that have a strong spicyconcord-like flavor. The berries are medium in acidity and have a firm texture. The vine is productive and can be pruned to short spurs. The berry size can be increased by applying gibberellic acid. The variety differs from the other two sibling varieties, called IFG Thirty-seven and IFG Thirty-five, in several ways, such as having a larger berry size, stronger flavor, and larger cluster size. This new variety is being introduced to improve hardiness, disease and insect resistance as well as to incorporate aromatic flavors. Previous introduced interspecific varieties have had limited commercial success due to small size, large seeds, and skins that are not well-adhered to the flesh.

Problems solved by technology

Clusters are medium size, and often do not set enough berries which can be ameliorated by tipping before bloom.

Embodiment Construction

[0012]Throughout this specification, color names beginning with a small letter signify that the name of that color, as used in common speech, is aptly descriptive. Color names beginning with a capital letter designate values based upon R.H.S. Colour Chart, published in 2015 by The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England.

[0013]Throughout this specification, subjective description values conform to those set forth by the UPOV International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants publication ‘Grapevine Vitis L. Guidelines’.

[0014]The descriptive matter which follows pertains to ‘IFG Thirty-six’ plants grown in the vicinity of Delano, Kern County, Calif. during 2017, and is believed to apply to plants of the variety grown under similar conditions of soil and climate elsewhere:

Abstract

This invention is a new and distinct grapevine variety denominated ‘IFG Thirty-six’. The new grapevine is characterized by producing naturally large seedless black berries having a broad ellipsoidal shape with a strong spicy concord-like labrusca flavor. Fruits are medium in acidity, with a firm texture and have excellent eating quality. Berries color readily even in hot climatic conditions and produce completely colored black berries. Vines are productive and can be pruned to short spurs.

Description

[0001]Latin name of the genus and species claimed: Vitis interspecific hybrid.[0002]Variety denomination: ‘IFG THIRTY-SIX.’BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION[0003]The new and distinct grapevine plant described and claimed herein originated from a hand pollinated cross of ‘01161-040-184’ (unnamed Vitis vinifera selection from the IFG breeding program), and ‘IFG Thirty-four’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,325) hybridized in May 2008. The abortive seed traces were subsequently embryo cultured and the resulting 245 plants were planted in the field in April 2009. The present variety of grapevine was selected as a single plant in September 2011 and was first asexually propagated by hardwood cuttings in December 2011 near Delano, Kern County, Calif. These resulting cuttings produced second generation plants that were planted during April 2012 near Delano, Kern County, Calif. were observed for four years and found to reproduce true-to-type.BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION[0004]The new grapevine plant ‘IFG ...
