Benefits of technology

The patent describes an orthopedic medical device assembly that includes a first bearing for attachment to an implant. The first bearing has a first recess with a minimum point of inflection. The assembly also includes a second bearing with a second recess and a second minimum point of inflection. The second bearing has a second thickness. The assembly also includes a humeral stem with a tray and a proximal end. The tray has a plane at an angle from about 135° to about 155° from a longitudinal axis of the stem. The assembly further includes a kit that includes the first bearing, the second bearing, and a third bearing with a different minimum point of inflection and thickness. The technical effects of the patent include improved stability and secure attachment of the implant to the host bone, as well as reduced stress on the implant and reduced risk of complications during surgery.

Problems solved by technology

One drawback with RSA is the appearance of the shoulder after the surgery, i.e., the dropped shoulder deformity.
This is particularly problematic in thin female subjects.
In some cases, for example, subjects who have undergone RSA cannot maintain the thin straps of dresses or bras on their shoulders.

Abstract

An orthopedic medical device assembly that includes a first bearing for attachment to an implant and a second bearing for attachment to an implant, such as a glenosphere.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE[0001]The exemplary embodiments of the subject disclosure relate generally to a reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) system.[0002]RSA restores a fulcrum on the glenoid so that the deltoid can then rotate the arm upward. This is accomplished by taking an unconstrained joint (i.e., a large ball on a small socket) and converting it to a constrained joint (i.e., introducing a large socket to replace the ball and a small ball to replace the socket). This constraining of the joint is a reason why RSA outcomes are predictably good, as the constrained implant does all the work and does not rely on soft tissue to achieve stability and function. These advantages have allowed RSA surgeries to gain prominence, now being used for more indications to treat a wider domain of subjects.[0003]Nevertheless, RSA still has room for improvement. One drawback with RSA is the appearance of the shoulder after the surgery, i.e., the dropped shoulder deformity. This is particularly ...
