Benefits of technology

The invention is about a method to analyze the way a person drives a car. The method involves a system in the car that analyzes the driver's actions and sends the data to a stationary unit that processes it and determines how the driver is doing. This helps gather important information about the driver's behavior and can be done with a simple system or by leveraging existing technology in the car.

Problems solved by technology

None has met with notable success mainly because of costs, “Big-Brother” modes of monitoring and lack of obtainable clear actuarial inference fidelity.

Embodiment Construction

[0082]FIG. 1 shows a schematic drawing of an analyzing system 2 comprising a vehicle analyzing system 4 and a remote and stationary processing unit 6 in a building 8. The vehicle analyzing system 4 contains a base device 14 fixed to a vehicle 12 and a mobile device 10, which is a portable computer, in this embodiment a smart phone. The mobile device 10 is held in a holder 15 of the fixed device 14 and kept in physical contact with the fixed device 14.

[0083]It is to be noted, that if the vehicle analyzing system 4 does not have the fixed device 14 and works alone with the mobile device 10 the holder 15 can be constructed as stand alone device for holding the mobile device 10. A mobile device held in the holder 15—either as part of the fixed device 14 or as stand alone device—performs the same acceleration as the vehicle 12 and may be used as accelerometer.

[0084]The mobile device 10 contains at least a processor 16, a memory 18, a location unit 20, like a GPS unit, a communication mea...

Abstract

A disclosed method analyzes characteristics of a vehicle driver, especially for insurance purposes. The method is performed by a cooperation of an analyzing vehicle system in a vehicle and a stationary processing unit remote from the vehicle. The analyzing vehicle system determines a driver operation characteristics parameter from the driving vehicle and sends the parameter to the stationary processing unit. The stationary processing unit derives a metric from that parameter as driver operation characteristics.

Description

RELATED APPLICATIONS[0001]The present application claims the benefit of priority under 35 USC §119(e) to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 624,016, filed on Apr. 13, 2012.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION[0002]1. Field of the Invention[0003]The invention relates to a method for analyzing operation characteristics of a vehicle driver by means of an analyzing system, comprising an analyzing vehicle system and a stationary processing unit.[0004]2. Description of the Related Art[0005]Analyzing systems are known, for example, from FR2936631, US 6868386, EP0700009B1, US5797134 and US6064970. Insurer rate models called Pay As You Drive (PAYD), which equated rates to mileage, have been around for some time. A more detailed Insurer rate model is called Pay How You Drive (PHYD). PHYD adds a direct monitoring of driver operation characteristics. None has met with notable success mainly because of costs, “Big-Brother” modes of monitoring and lack of obtainable clear actuarial inference fidelity.SUM...
