[0177]In an example embodiment of the present invention (schematically depicted in FIG. 31), a noninvasive alcohol measurement system is comprised of 13 VCSEL's that are used to measure 22 discrete wavelengths. Table 1 shows a list of each VCSEL and the associated target peak wavelengths that will be interrogated during the course of the measurement. In this embodiment, each VCSEL is stabilized to a constant temperature. The peak wavelength of each VCSEL is controlled based on the circuit shown in FIG. 7 (each VCSEL having its own circuit), which also enables the VCSEL to be turned On and Off. Abstract

An apparatus and method for non-invasive determination of attributes of human tissue by quantitative infrared spectroscopy to clinically relevant levels of precision and accuracy. The system includes subsystems optimized to contend with the complexities of the tissue spectrum, high signal- to-noise ratio and photometric accuracy requirements, tissue sampling errors, calibration maintenance problems, and calibration transfer problems. The subsystems include an illumination / modulation subsystem, a tissue sampling subsystem, a calibration maintenance subsystem, an FTIR spectrometer subsystem, a data acquisition subsystem, and a computing subsystem.

Blood measurements define the gold standard for determining alcohol intoxication levels.
