Problems solved by technology

The disadvantage of this approach is that engaging the IOL with the microhook is cumbersome and requires further cuts in the eye to insert a second microhook instrument that pulls the IOL into the eye
Furthermore, it is relatively difficult to coordinate the control of two instruments inserted into the eye through different incisions

Embodiment Construction

[0047] The invention will first be described with reference to Figures 1 and 2, in which a first embodiment of a lens according to the invention and an apparatus for implanting such a lens is shown. The lens shown in FIG. 2 is also shown in FIG. 18 .

[0048] The insertion instrument 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2 is used to insert an intraocular lens 4 into the eye through an incision 20 in the cornea (shown schematically in Figure 2). The insertion instrument 1 has an elongated insertion part 2 protruding from a grip 14 and a hook part 3 at the end of the part 2 extending laterally from the part 2 . The intraocular lens 4 to be implanted using the device 1 has haptics 5 , 6 extending from opposite sides of the optic portion 7 of the intraocular lens 4 . The optical part 7 is deformable. The haptics 5, 6 are respectively formed by a pair of arms 8, 9 so as to sandwich the iris tissue between the mutually facing surfaces of the arms 8, 9 located in the clamping area, the haptics...

Abstract

An intraocular lens includes an optical portion made of a transparent, deformable material, at least one haptic radially projecting from the optical portion for supporting the optical portion in a position parallel to and against an anterior iris surface plane, and at least one aperture bounded by the haptic. At least a stiff portion of the haptic has a higher stiffness against bending about an axis in the radial direction than the optical portion. Furthermore, the stiff portion has a width (a) measured parallel to the plane and perpendicular to the radial direction, which is smaller than the size (b) of the optical portion in the direction of the width. The present invention also relates to an instrument and methods for preparing and carrying out insertion of such a lens.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of the Chinese Invention Patent Application No. 03120622.0, filed on March 17, 2003, entitled "Intraocular Lens for Implantation in the Eye and Apparatus and Method for Inserting Such Lens". technical field [0002] The present invention relates to an intraocular lens, an apparatus for inserting an intraocular lens into an eye, a method for preparing an intraocular lens for insertion into an eye, and a method for inserting an intraocular lens into an eye comprising such a preparation method Methods. Background technique [0003] Such lenses, such instruments, and such methods are disclosed in US Patent 4,573,998. One of the most common eye surgeries is the implantation of an intraocular lens, a structure approximately 5 mm thick and approximately 9 mm in diameter, after surgical removal of the opaque lens from the cataract patient's eye. Intraocular lenses are often implanted in the anterior chamber of the eye (in front of...
