[0143] Botulinum toxin type A for headache and medication overuse headache disorders

[0144] research summary

[0145] A clinical study was performed involving patients complaining of headaches and frequently taking acute pain medications such as narcotics and triptans for pain control. Some of these patients were diagnosed with a medication overuse headache (MOH) condition. Patients in the study were given a botulinum toxin (BOTOX) three times on days 0, 90, and 180 during the clinical study. BOTOX injections were administered intramuscularly with an average of 20 discrete injections per patient during each of the three injection periods. BOTOX was administered to up to seven different muscles (ie a total of 20 injections into 7 muscles).

[0146] Each patient was given from 105 to 260 units of BOTOX in each of three courses of treatment. Patients were found to have a reduction in (a) the number of headaches experienced by these patients (Figure 1), and; (b) the daily us...

Abstract

A headache can be treated more effectively by co-administration of a botulinum toxin and a triptan drug to a patient and / or the effectiveness of a triptan medication can be increased. The botulinum toxin can be botulinum toxin type A and the botulinum toxin can be administered to or to the vicinity of where a patient experiences or is predisposed to experience pain or a headache.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of Application Serial No. 10 / 789,180 filed February 26, 2004, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates to methods of treating pain. In particular, the present invention relates to the use of botulinum toxin in the treatment and prevention of headaches, and in the treatment of an acute pain relief condition. The invention also includes improved methods of treating headaches with triptans and botulinum toxin, and methods of increasing the effectiveness of triptans in treating headaches, such as migraines. [0004] In many cases, if not most cases, physical discomfort leads to pain. Pain is usually felt when the free nerve endings that make up the pain receptors in the skin and certain internal tissues are mechanically, thermally, chemically, or otherwise injuriously stimula...
